Sikandar bin Ilyas Shah

Sikandar bin Ilyas Shah (reigned: 1358-1389) was the son of the first independent Sultan of Bengal, Shamsuddin Ilyas. He mainly consolidated the position that the sultanate had gained under his father and had a fairly long reign. He is also known for having defeated the Sultan of Delhi, Firoz Shah Tughluq in 1359.

Sikandar Shah was regarded as being serious and polite, enjoyed the company of scholars, and revered the clergy and Sufis. He carried on his father's liberal and tolerant policies.

He is particularly renowned for having constructed the Adina mosque, the largest mosque in the Indian Subcontinent at the time, at his capital of Firozabad (Pandua). In the later years of his rule, his only son, Ghiyasuddin Azam Shah rebellion against him and it was during the fighting that Sikandar died. [i]

The coin

A large number of coins were struck in Sikandar’s lengthy reign. The coins from the latter part of his rule are perhaps the most artistic among all coins from the Bengal Sultanate.

The coin contains the extensive list of titles held by Sikandar Shah. Most of the titles are of a religious nature and take up both sides of the coin. The title of “Ghaus al-Islam wa’l muslimin” is inscribed with a part of it in the form of an arabesque on the reverse.

The margins on the obverse display the names of the four “Rightly-guided Caliphs” enclosed in circles and accompanied by their epithets. Meanwhile, the margin on the reverse contains the mint and date.

This coin was also minted in Firozabad, which served as the capital of the Bengal Sultanate at this time. The mint name also contains the epithet of ‘Al-Balad Al-Mahrusah’ meaning ‘The Fortified City’.[ii]

The ones digit of the date is difficult to ascertain due to it being off-flan.
